Surfing in Matosinhos: The Complete Guide for Visitors

Ten minutes from downtown Porto by metro, Matosinhos beach is one of the easiest places in Europe to catch your first wave. The bay is sheltered by a long breakwater, the sandy bottom is forgiving, and the waves roll in soft and consistent — which is exactly why the beach is lined with surf schools from March to November.

Why Matosinhos is perfect for beginners

Unlike the heavier beach breaks further north, Matosinhos offers gentle, slow-peeling waves most days of the year. Mornings are usually cleanest, before the northwest wind picks up after lunch. The water sits around 15–18 °C, so schools include a wetsuit with every lesson.

Getting there

Take the metro blue line to Matosinhos Sul and walk five minutes to the sand, or grab a 15-minute taxi from the city centre. If you’re staying in Porto, you don’t need a car — this is the city’s beach.

Booking a lesson

A group lesson costs around €25–35 for two hours, including board and wetsuit. You’ll spend the first half hour on the sand learning the pop-up, then it’s straight into the whitewater. Most first-timers stand up on day one — the instructors are that good, and the waves are that friendly.

What to bring

Swimwear, a towel, sunscreen and water. Everything else — board, wetsuit, and the stoke — is provided.

👉 One more thing worth planning: proof. You will stand up, and nobody will believe how good you looked. Book a cinematic drone video of your session and take home a film of your first wave, edited for Instagram and TikTok.

After your surf

Matosinhos is Porto’s seafood district — follow the smell of grilled sardines on Rua Heróis de França. You’ve earned it.

Reading about waves is nice. Starring in one is better.
